Environment Day was suitably observed in the presence of the environment activist cum writer personality Mr. Pranay Lal, who was the key – note speaker for the day.
Mr. Pranay reemphasized the need to follow up on the causes that are being highlighted on a occasion such as these, else he remarked it might just be akin to rendering lip – service. He highlighted this point by saying that barring a few countries such as France and Thailand, none of the other countries seem to have acted on the last year’s theme. Same is the scenario in our country where barring a small state like Sikkim, where plastics have been banned completely, no other state seems to have been following up on the last year’s theme. Drawing to the alarming effect on Kerala, he pointed out that in 1976 there was only one ward for cancer in the state, that too, in anticipation of a possibility of an occurrence and now there are 18 hospitals in the state of Kerala alone which provide treatment for cancer. Same is the case with infertility across the country. He remarked that unless we focus on sustainable consumption, it might get very difficult for us in terms of problems that could arise due to environmental issues and exploration of other planets, though exciting, will not be the solution to saving our planet. He concluded by saying small steps will go a long way in contributing to this and it can begin with one’s own families. It was a thought provoking and insightful session.
